Beef and broccoli is one of the most popular take out meals, but take out can be really expensive! Slow cooker beef and broccoli is perfect for getting that take-out fix at a fraction of the cost. Not only will you save money, but you will know exactly what is in it. No hidden ingredients or MSG here.
Slow Cooker Beef and Broccoli
Slow cooker beef and broccoli is so easy to make, you will wish you did it sooner! Because everything is tossed in the crockpot, you will only have one, I repeat, one dish to wash after dinner!
Eye of round steak is used for this recipe, but you can use whatever beef is on sale. Flank steak, sirloin, or skirt steak would also work well. The sauce for the slow cooker beef and broccoli uses soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and ketchup as a base, and is flavored with garlic, honey, and Chinese spice powder.
The slow cooker beef and broccoli sauce serves double duty, acting as a marinade and a sauce for the completed meal, which will be thickened at the end with a cornstarch slurry. For even more flavor, let the meat marinade overnight so it will really take in the flavors.
Ingredients Needed:
- Eye of round steak
- Soy sauce
- Hoisin sauce
- Ketchup
- Honey
- Chinese 5 spice powder
- Minced garlic
- Water
- Frozen broccoli florets
How to Prep Slow Cooker Beef and Broccoli
Like our other meal plan recipes , this slow cooker beef and broccoli can be prepped ahead of time to make it even easier! I love being able to just put dump dinner in the crockpot.
To begin prepping the slow cooker beef and broccoli, cut the steak into cubes, or bite-sized pieces. If you are using flank or skirt steak, then be sure to cut against the grain for more tender meat.
After that, add the ingredients for the marinade and sauce into a bag along with the meat. Firstly, add soy sauce, hoisin sauce, ketchup, and honey. Secondly, add Chinese 5 spice powder, minced garlic, and water.
In case you have not used Chinese 5 spice powder before, it is a blend of cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise, and Szechaun peppercorns. If you would like to make your own seasoning blend, then check out this recipe from Curious Cuisiniere.
